In big beaker (provided cleaned Prego pasta jar) , using kitchen scale, add (300 ml) of (prefiltered) water.  Pic 1. Add potash first and then cochneal bag.

Place on paper plate. Add pre-pepared ground cochneal (0.24 g) in tea bag + 4g pre-measured Potash (pic 2) in jar. Pic 3. Combine by swirling for a few seconds. Pic 4. Water now a uniform dark purple.

Turn pot of water on high (gas stove) and place jar in water in order to bring to boil.

Meanwhile, measure out 50 ml water  into smaller beaker (mid size mason jar. Pic 5. Add 10 g premeasured Alum (pic 6).  Pic 7. Place in bain marie. Stir w chapstick. hot . use hot pad to hold down stirred for 1 mon, still a little solids remaining. Pic 8 . remove from heat after dissolved (about 3 min) pic 9.Set aside.

Cochneal mixture is now a deeper purple. Pic 10  turned down heat to medium high, Outside water beginning to boil. Take second chopstick and stir. Even deeper purple, very small bubbles/steam on top of mixture Pic 11. Begin 20 min timer. Stir occasionally. Bubbles underneath jar making noise and pushing up jar. Turned down heat a  little.

Prepare for addition of Alum:  get out ph strips and a new paper plate Pic 12.

Place tweezers in E’s left over boiled water to sterilize. Pic 13

Take mixture out Pic  14. Tale bag out. Bag is now empty.  Mixture very very very dark purple (midnight purple? Almost black) To test Ph level, use tweezers to dip litmus paper in mixture. Place litmus paper on paper plate and label first strip “0”, hence forth numbered see below. Measure Ph using provided key. To measure Ph place near window.

Add Alum mixture  using dropper, stirring, and testing Ph after mixing for several seconds.
